If you've ever pulled the burner blower housing on a Southern Pride gas smoker for service, you may have noticed the air shutter doesn't always look the same from one unit to the next. That's normal. Southern Pride has used two different shutter designs on the burner blower induction motor over the years, and knowing which one you have matters when you're troubleshooting or ordering a replacement.
How to Tell Them Apart
The difference comes down to the shape of the holes cut into the shutter:
- Old style: round holes
- New style: pie slice shaped holes
That's the whole tell. Pull the shutter and look at the hole pattern. Round holes mean you're working with the older design. Pie slice shaped holes mean it's the newer one.
Why It Matters
The air shutter controls how much combustion air mixes in as the burner blower runs. If you're diagnosing a burn issue, cleaning the blower assembly, or sourcing a replacement part, you need to know which shutter style is on the unit in front of you before you start pulling parts or placing an order. Grabbing the wrong style shutter — or assuming every unit is built the same — is an easy way to waste a trip.
Take a minute to visually confirm the hole shape before you do anything else. It's a small detail, but it's the kind of thing that separates a clean repair from a second trip back to the truck.
