New-Style Smoke Extractor Dimensions
The current smoke extractor housing measures 15.1875" wide by 17.125" tall on the mounting flange. The damper opening inside that housing is 10.1875" square. Use these figures when you're laying out ductwork or checking hood clearance before the unit goes in.
Swapping an Old Dual-Damper Unit to New Style
The dual damper smoke extractor that utilized a linkage system (#593001) is obsolete. If you've got one of these on a gas smoker, the replacement is the single removable damper smoke extractor (#593004).
It's a direct bolt-in swap, but it requires the old-to-new style smoke extractor adapter plate, part #593014, between the smoker and the new extractor.
Account for the height difference before you order duct:
- The single damper smoke extractor itself is 2-1/4" (57mm) taller than the old dual damper unit.
- The adapter plate adds another 4" (102mm) on top of that.
Between the two, you're raising the extractor roughly 6-1/4" off the smoker deck compared to the old dual-damper setup. Plan your exhaust duct length accordingly — most swaps will need it shortened or the transition reworked.
One more wrinkle: the actuator motor on the single damper smoke extractor doesn't have a port for the conduit connection the exhaust fan wiring needs. Some field modification of the conduit routing is required on these swaps.
SPX-300 Uses a Different Extractor
Don't grab the standard part off the shelf for an SPX-300. That model uses a different new-style smoke extractor, part #593005, instead of the standard #593004 used on other affected models.
Which Models Were Affected
The original dual-damper smoke extractor bulletin covered these gas smoker models:
- BBR series - 79 & 700
- SPK series - 280, 500 (units without a "K" in the serial number), 700, 1400 (units built prior to 2016)
- XLR series - 350, 600, 1000, 1400, 1600 & 1600-4
- UXR series - 100
If your unit falls into one of those groups and still has the old dual-damper extractor, plan the adapter plate and the height adjustment into the job before you start.
